Landen Compton

The summer of 2017 started out like any other summer for Landen Compton.  He finished up the school year and got right into training and summer sports activities.  Staying in shape was a top priority since Landen competes in multiple school sports.  During a hot, summer track meet, following the hurdles Landen started feeling lethargic and had a bit of a pain in the center of his chest.  Being a pretty big kid and the weather being so hot, everyone figured it was just a little dehydration and the heat getting to him.  The next week, Landen continued his strenuous workout routine like normal but things were anything but normal.  What Landen didn’t know was he was showing signs he had a deadly heart condition that had never been diagnosed.  Throughout the week, during peak workouts, he would have episodes where he would come close to blacking out.  Fortunately, Landen and his parents took these symptoms seriously and took Landen to his pediatrician.  After nothing was discovered through a normal exam, his pediatrician went a step further and did take a closer look at Landen’s heart.

Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome (WPW) is what the additional testing discovered.  WPW is an electrical disorder that causes the heart to beat erratically and often leads to sudden cardiac arrest.  Although WPW is a very dangerous condition to have, it is also very treatable when found.  Landen is one of the lucky ones and had a successful procedure that completely repaired his heart.

Finding that Landen had WPW not only saved his life but it has also had a big impact on his ability to perform better in sports.  “I thought not being able to get through an entire quarter of basketball because I was so tired, or sitting and feeling my heart racing was just the way it was supposed to be.  Now that it is fixed it’s amazing!” says Landen, who is now back to participating in all the sports he loves and doing better than ever.

Landen’s parents want every parent to know that “He was born with this condition and without these tests, the results could have been what no family wants to experience.  We are forever grateful to our family doctor for referring us on.”
